Mikaea, officially the Patrimony of Mikael, is a sovereign island nation located in the north Atlantic Ocean, off the northeastern coast of North America. The country is comprised of the island of Mikaea and several smaller islands that are located some 600 kilometers (370 mi) to the east of Canada, and roughly 1,720 kilometers (1,070 mi) to the northeast of the U.S. state of Maine. Mikaea is a heavily-forested and rugged country notable for its relatively remote location, being one of the last landmasses in the world to be settled by humans, with the arrival of first humans being in the early-11th century. Mikaea is likewise notable for being one of the most humid and foggy countries in the Northern Hemisphere, sitting at the convergence of the warm Gulf Stream and cool Labrador currents. The country is divided into twelve clades, subdivided into 122 microclades; with its capital and largest city, Family Pride, located eastern half of the country. Geographically, Mikaea is one of the smaller nations in the world, with a total area of 89,461 km² (34,541 sq mi), making it the 110th largest nation in the world. Mikaea is home to more than twelve million inhabitants, almost all of whom belong to the distinct human subspecies known as the Mikaeans. Of these, more than half of them reside within the capital city district and its adjoining suburbs. With the exception of Family Pride, all of the other major cities of Mikaea boast populations of less than a million, with the five largest cities outside of the capital being Black Garden, Heirarch's Triumph, Saint's Domain, Clairvoyant Vision, and Glorious Song.

Etymology

The island of Mikaea is named after Mikael O'Neill, the creator of the inhabitants and founding father of the nation. In government documents and foreign correspondence, the country is officially referred to as the "Patrimony of Mikael", referring to Mikael's personal ownership and dominion over all of the Mikaeans and the land upon which they live, as well as his role as the biological father of all living Mikaeans in the world. In typical day-to-day life, the name "Mikaea" is used by Mikaeans and foreigners alike. The feminine name "Mikaea" arose from the common view of the all-female Mikaeans, that given that all of their people are the direct biological offspring of Mikael, the country constituted by the Mikaeans as a whole was Mikael's "daughter" in the most realistic and symbolic sense of the word. So as to more clearly delineate between the terminology of the two names: the "Patrimony of Mikael" refers to any direct communication with the Mikaean government, as the government and bureaucracy is vested with the power and speak and act in the name of the Highfather; the term "Mikaea" represents any reference to the country itself, which does not directly include the Highfather, but solely its entirely-female citizenry. Thus, to summarize the point, the Patrimony—the government and its officials—is the "person" of Mikael, while Mikaea—the country and its citizens—is the "daughter" of Mikael.

Mikaea seats just below the juncture point of the Labrador Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean. The country lies between latitudes 51° and 55°N, and longitudes 43° and 49°W. The mainland of Canada is 600 kilometers (370 mi) to the west, with the closest approach being the island of Newfoundland 400 kilometers (250 mi) to the southwest, while the second-closest body of land is Greenland 650 kilometers (400 mi) to the north. The country covers a total land area of 89,461 km² (34,541 sq mi), making it the 110th-largest country in the world, and the 20th-largest island in the world.
