Name[edit]
- name: the common name of the state
- official_name: the full name of the state (such as "State of California" or "Commonwealth of Pennsylvania")
- nickname: one or more nicknames for the state, usually separated by semicolons

- image_flag: file name of the state flag image; example:

Elevations[edit]
- elevation_max_point: text naming the location of the highest point in the state; usually it's the name of a mountain or hill
- elevation_max_ft: elevation of the highest point in feet
- elevation_max_m: elevation of the highest point in meters
- elevation_ft: mean elevation of the state in feet
- elevation_m: mean elevation of the state in meters
- elevation_min_point: (optional) text naming the location of the lowest point in the state; usually it's the name of a body of water
- elevation_min_ft: elevation of the lowest point in feet
- elevation_min_m: elevation of the lowest point in meters
History[edit]
- Former: (optional) the article name for the place before it became a state; example (for Oregon):

- Legislature: a link to the article about the state's legislature; example:

Microformat[edit]
The HTML mark up produced by this template includes an hCard microformat, which makes the place-name and location parsable by computers, either acting automatically to catalogue article across Wikipedia, or via a browser tool operated by a person, to (for example) add the subject to an address book. If the place or venue has an "established", "founded", "opened" or similar date that is specific to the day, use {{start date}} unless the date is before 1583 CE. If it has a URL, use {{URL}}.
